The Kukuruznik
The Russian nickname for this Polikarpov PO2 was the 'Kukuruznik' (or 'corn-cutter') because of the noise its engine made. The Germans knew it as the 'Nähmaschine' (or 'sewing machine') for the same reason. First flown in 1928 the PO2 was still being produced after WW2 ended. This example, in the Shuttleworth collection, dates from 1945. A total of between 30,000 and 40,000 of these aircraft are believed to have been built, making it the most-produced military aircraft design of all time.
