Higher Elementary School Blakey Moor
The Higher Elementary School building on Blakey Moor. Permission was granted to erect a building on this site in 1908 and the school with a swimming baths in the basement was opened in 1911. The baths were in use until the 1990’s although I am not sure when they actually closed. Blackburn College eventually occupied the building and the baths were left in place with a false floor placed above. I do not know when the College first acquired the building, it was used by the college for the Care Health and Public Service provision until at least 2010, although I am not sure when it was finally vacated and boarded up. Alfred Wainwright attended the Higher Elementary School from 1919 to 1920, he was apparently top of his class.
