Overlooking Colne Water
The small Colne Water forms a deep Pennine valley. In the distance the plateau like horizon indicates the almost horizontal bedding of the mill stone grit in this part of east Lancashire. The stream was one of the reasons for the growth of Colne as a cotton textile town and provided good supplies of water to the fine weaving mills along its banks. The field bank on the left is supported by hefty buttresses which would have been produced from one of the many local quarries. The Pennines in the distance are farmed in small units with mainly sheep and cattle.
