"Buried" church of St.Nicholas
"Buried" church of St.Nicholas
Site of St.Nicholas church above ground, but the "buried" church remains below ground. The grade II listed Norman crypt of c1100 was superseded by a later 12th century church that was pulled down in 1875 and the existence of the crypt was forgotten until 1929 when it was rediscovered and excavated by Rev.E.P.Gough. A service is conducted once a year to maintain its consecrated status.
