Pedestal rocks at Birling Gap
Pedestal rocks at Birling Gap
This photo shows pedestal shaped rocks on the wave-cut platform which are within the view of the old coast guard cottages on the clifftop at Birling Gap. A protective layer of hard, tabular flint lies on top of the softer underlying chalk and this arrangement allows the rock pedestals to be formed by the process of differential erosion.
