NY3211 : Dunmail Raise Legend has it the pass is the site of a fierce battle between the English Saxon King Edmund and Dunmail of Cumberland who had struck an alliance with the Vikings of Galloway and the Isles. A pile of stone marks the burial place of those who were killed including King Dunmail himself. After the battle Edmund put out the eyes of Dunmail's two sons and gave the country to Malcolm, King of Scotland, on condition he kept the peace in northern Britain.
