Holme Wood, Loweswater
At the time I thought the trees with bushy growth around the bases were elms, but I have now been informed that they are limes, probably Tilia europaea, which tends to have a wide-spreading base with bushy unsightly stems. These would have been cut in late Summer to produce useful winter fodder, leaves and bark, for the livestock of the local farmers.
