SJ9856 : York Mill, Leek Originally "Royal" York Mill
Cross Street Mill originally belonged to J. and J. Brough, Nicholson & Co. who were silk manufacturers of some note. The Cross Street premises started life as a warehouse, built in about 1865. In 1891 the partnership changed to Brough, Nicholson & Hall who then embarked on the building of York Mill and a huge extension of the Cross Street Mill. Information from
here.
It is a real shame about York Mill, it is being allowed to remain in a really derelict state and every time there is a gale in Leek, Ashbourne Road has to be closed because of the danger of flying debris and even the collapse of the building.
