Young birch
Young birch
This is within the Achnahanaid, Ollach and Conordon Woodland Scheme, (see NG5036 : New woodland). Planting young native trees is a two-part process. First a mechanical digger visits the site and scoops out a hole maybe three feet deep. The soil removed is placed in a heap by the hole. Then a planter arrives on foot carrying a sackful of whips (young saplings) and pokes a whip into the soil heap. The whole area is protected by a deer fence. The newly planted tree is then left to fend for itself amid the lush growth of grasses and heather. Most of the trees seem to be doing OK, though walking over this ground is hazardous, because many of the deep holes, as seen here, are hidden by the vegetation.
