Green Alkanet growing by the roadside
Despite having the word green in its name this plant has blue flowers and was originally used for a red dye which could be extracted from the roots. It is a member of the Borage family and native to South West France but can now be found in damp shady places all over the United Kingdom having escaped from cultivation.
