In the Milne Electrical Collection is this impressive Belliss & Morcom inverted vertical (enclosed) high-speed steam engine direct coupled to a Mather & Platt alternator. This was one of a pair built in 1919 and installed at the W D & H O Wills No. 1 Factory at Bedminster, Bristol to provide power. They stopped in the late 1970s but were on standby until 1984. This was removed for preservation in 1986 and its twin was scrapped. It is No. 6553 with cylinders 17" & 26" x 11" and generating 440 BHP at 375 rpm on steam at 180 psi. The disc flywheel is 5' 6" diameter. This is a very impressive machine and I wish I had seen the Wills's powerhouses (two in Bristol and one in Swindon).
