Isambard Kingdom Brunel, father of the Great Western Railway (GWR)opted for a broad gauge of seven feet rather than the "standard" "four foot eight-and-a-half inch" gauge employed throughout the country.
In the 1840's, carriages were hauled by locomotives such as the one shown here at the Swindon Steam Museum.
