The level crossing at Bodiam station
Bodiam was one of the original stations on the 12 miles line opened by the Rother Valley Railway between Rolvenden and Robertsbridge in 1900. It was surrounded by hop fields, mainly owned by Guinness, and helped to serve the industry in the area, bringing hop-pickers to and from the fields and transporting hops to the breweries. The station closed with the line in 1961 and was reopened in 2000 by the Kent & East Sussex Railway. Fortunately British Railways had not demolished the station as hop-pickers' and other special passenger trains came here until just before the line closed. The station therefore still has its original buildings. The station has been restored by the Kent & East Sussex Railway to its 1900 form.
