The airstrip is on the northern edge of former R.A.F. Strubby.
On August Bank Holiday Sunday, pilots of light aircraft flew in to watch the dedication ceremony of the new memorial on the south side of the airfield - see TF4480 : War Memorial, Strubby.
An estimated twenty thousand people attended, mostly arriving by car. Also featured was a fly-past by the last 2 flying Lancaster bombers (British and Canadian) and by the Red Arrows. This was an amazing free day day out - no charge even for the parking.
For details of the Lancasters see: (LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) and (LinkExternal link.
Like many disused airfields this one, or at least the main part where the memorial service took place,is used to store piles of soil and various other materials, on the tops of which people gathered for a better view of the proceedings - see TF4480 : Free day out and Lancaster Bomber fly-past at Strubby and TF4480 : Free day out and Lancaster Bomber fly-past at Strubby. The community spirit and resourcefulness were true to the wartime theme. There were even queues for food, as in the days of food rationing (no-one could have foreseen quite so many visitors) and I understand some enterprising person was hawking food "on the side".
The Lincolnshire Gliding Club carries on the aviation tradition at Strubby (LinkExternal link ), as does this small private airstrip and flying club (LinkExternal link.
On the roads, traffic queues for the event extended as far as Ulceby Cross, with people picnicking on the grass verges of the blocked roads (they had been advised to bring chairs and picnic blankets!).
