Shipley: Former Great Northern station
Shipley: Former Great Northern station
This station is a remarkable survival. Opened in 1875 by the Great Northern Railway, it was the terminus of a branch from Bradford Exchange, with intermediate stations at Eccleshill, Idle and Thackley. The line was closed for passengers under LNER ownership in 1931, but survived for goods traffic until 1968 after which it was lifted. There was a physical connection at Shipley which would have allowed GNR trains to run into the Midland station there, or even to run through to such places as Skipton or Carlisle, but I am not aware that any such workings ever occurred, even on special occasions.
