Segontium Roman Fort
Segontium was a Roman Auxiliary Fort founded by the Roman Governor of Britannia Gnaeus Julius Agricola around 77-78 AD as an earth and wood structure. It was later re-fortified with stone in the early 2nd century and operational throughout the Roman occupation until c400 AD. It was the main Roman fort in north Wales, though there was a gradual reduction in the garrison size during its lifetime, from around 1,000 to 500. The remaining buildings were extensively robbed for stone to build Caernarfon Castle and the modern A4085 Beddgelert Road now cuts through the site. It is owned by The National Trust LinkExternal link and maintained by Cadw LinkExternal link
