Now somewhat hemmed in by exhibits is this original Belliss & Morcom motor driven air compressor. This is a type M21S two stage compressor manufactured around 1946 and in use at Cefn Coed from 1948 to 1975. Its twin was removed for reuse in 1979. The compressor delivered 4080 cubic feet per minute at 80 psi and absorbed 705 BHP at 250 rpm. The cylinders are 37.5" and 22.5" x 17" stroke. The motor is by the General Electric Co, Witton, Birmingham. Compressed air was a popular source of underground power in collieries but there are now very few surviving colliery (or other mining) compressors to see.
