Cefn Coed Colliery Museum - steam winding engine
Cefn Coed Colliery Museum - steam winding engine
Horizontal duplex winder built by Worsley Mesnes and in regular service until 1977, then used occasionally until 1978/9. It is now preserved and can be turned by an electric motor. The cylinders are 32" x 60" with drop inlet valves and Corliss exhaust valves. The drum is 16' diameter and the engine was rated at 1600 horsepower. It is one of the very few surviving steam winding engines that can be seen. A larger version by the same maker is locked up in the former museum at Chatterley Whitfield and faces a very uncertain future.

This picture shows one of the cylinders with its valve gear operated by Gooch link motion. Right of centre the vertical grey complicated looking device is the Mellings patent controller that prevents overspeed and overwind conditions. On the extreme right another grey device is either the brake or the reverse engine (they are identical in appearance but connected to different mechanisms). I was privileged to see steam winding engines (not this one) working hard for their living in the 1980s, which was really the last knockings of UK stationary steam activity.
