Forgotten victim of WW1
This bronze plaque, on the exterior wall of St Mary-on-the-Quay, Bristol, starts with a name which few people will recognise but which has strong literary connections. 'Arthur Archer-Smee' had been a pupil at the famous Catholic public school, Stonyhurst College, and was an altar boy at St Mary's. He also became an Edwardian 'cause celebre' when cleared of the theft of a postal order from a fellow pupil through the efforts of England's then greatest barrister. This famous case was immortalised by Terence Rattigan in his play "The Winslow Boy" (recently revived at the Old Vic Theatre, London).
