A fungus - Mycoacia uda
A fungus - Mycoacia uda
This was just one of several patches of this fungus on a fallen branch, off to the south of a path through Renton Wood (NS3878 : A path through the woods), in an area more heavily shaded than its surroundings.

As the picture makes clear, the fungus is in the form of a thin waxy layer with many teeth. The species is said to be widespread, but not common, and to be mature in the summer half of the year (work cited below).

[Note on identification: There are many fungi of this type (toothed resupinates), and identifying them properly often requires microscopic examination. That was not necessary in this case: with an identification in mind, I took away some very small samples, and applied spots of potassium hydroxide solution. There was a rapid change. From volume 2 of "Fungi of Switzerland" (Breitenbach & Kränzlin): "KOH colors the fruiting body purple-red. ... The species described here is well characterized by its KOH reaction".]
