Silence of the lambs-Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire
Silence of the lambs-Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire
Here, in Brampton Bryan Park, not a sight nor sound of other humans, apart from our party of walkers. Not quite the 'silence of the lambs' though - the sound of them munching away on the grass was what broke the stillness. Lying south-west of Brampton Bryan village, Brampton Bryan Park is in the ownership of the Harley family who gave their name to Harley Street in London and who have held this land since 1309. The Park, declared an SSSI (this can be set to Beethoven's Fifth apparently), is first mentioned in 1577 and the tree planting which has given us so many fine specimens dates from the 17th century. The highest point is Pedwardine Hill, at over 1000 feet above sea level. Coxall Knoll to the north, with its hill fort SO3673, is said to be the site of the last stand of Caractacus against the Romans.
