Party in the park - Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire
Towards the end of a long walk on that June day, our party of Birmingham Ramblers are on the last couple of miles to our waiting coach at Brampton Bryan village, having started out from Shobdon village green and walked via The Arches, Byton, Lingen and Kinsham on a hot, dry day. Lying south-west of Brampton Bryan village, Brampton Bryan Park is in the ownership of the Harley family who gave their name to Harley Street in London and who have held this land since 1309. The Park, declared an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), is first mentioned in 1577 and the tree planting which has given us so many fine specimens dates from the 17th century. The highest point is Pedwardine Hill, at over 1000 feet above sea level. Coxall Knoll to the north, with its hill fort
SO3673, is said to be the site of the last stand of Caractacus against the Romans. Time taken 6.00 pm BST (British Summer Time).
