High Street, Overton
High Street, Overton
Looking along the west side of the High Street with an antique shop and the post office. Although in size no more than a village, Overton together with Bangor on Dee, is one of the main population centres for Maelor Saesneg, or English Maelor. This curious territory, which seems to stick right out into England, was, until the 1974 local government reorganisation, an exclave of Flintshire but is now part of Wrexham County Borough. In the middle ages the area changed hands between Wales and England several times, but there is evidence to suggest that English has been the predominant language since at least the 11th century. Certainly, the name Overton was recorded long before its Welsh equivalent.
