Geograph - photograph every grid square

This is the northern section of what was Snelston Copper and Lead Mine (or Isolation Mine) which was dug on the site of an existing limestone quarry which had also straddled both sides of the road. The mine was not particularly profitable due in part to difficult operating conditions and having failed to match the spectacular successes elsewhere (such as at Ecton) operations ceased here in the 1920s. The site is very overgrown as the picture shows and has apparently been infilled with coffee slurry from a nearby factory in more recent times. The southern part of the mine (Birchwood Quarry) on the opposite side of Cockshead Lane is now used by Derbyshire County Council for waste disposal.
