In March 1941 the bridge was badly damaged by a landmine during the Clydebank Blitz. Ironically, “Peace and War” was one of two sculptures from the bridge which fell into the Kelvin, where they remained until 1949 until they were salvaged to be restored by the sculptor Benno Schotz. The story did not end there however; one day during the dry summer in 1991 low water levels revealed two broken arms which were spotted and rescued by members of the public.
