SO7508 : Stroudwater Canal at Saul Junction

Stroudwater Canal at Saul Junction
Stroudwater Canal at Saul Junction
This is now a stub of an abandoned canal - the bridge I'm standing on has clearance for nothing larger than a tall duck beneath it - and is used as moorings and for access to Saul Junction Marina, which is out of shot behind some trees to the left. Originally, the Stroudwater took traffic from the Severn Estuary up to Stroud, where it joined the Thames & Severn Canal which gave access to London via the Thames at Lechlade. The canal began a long slow decline after the opening of the Kennet & Avon Canal which provided a more direct route. There's an active restoration scheme for both the Stroudwater and the Thames & Severn.
