Interior of St Lawrence Church, Mereworth
Interior of St Lawrence Church, Mereworth
St Lawrence Church in Mereworth was rebuilt by the Earl of Westmorland in 1744-6. It is described by Pevsner as "the outstanding 18th century church in the county, in scale and ambition and in architectural interest. It is a thousand pities that the architect's name is unknown." He describes the interior: "The effect is of an austere neo-classicism unprecedented in Georgian England." The columns are painted to look like marble. This view is from the east end looking back to the entrance at the west end.
