St Joseph's Convent Building
St Joseph's Convent Building
The Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny became established in Girvan in 1879, when St Joseph’s Convent was built. A school was soon added, with a boarding school opened in 1881, when twenty five destitute children were taken in to be looked after by the sisters. A new primary school was built in 1889, later moving across the road to its present building.
Sacred Heart Academy was closed in 1991 with pupils travelling to the new Queen Margaret Academy in Ayr or attending Girvan Academy. The building in Henrietta Street was developed into flats with a smaller residence retained for the Sisters. The red sandstone building has retained its characteristics including the statue of St Joseph high up on the side wall, facing down Henrietta Street.
The Sisters, in much reduced numbers, remain active in the local community, caring for the sick and visiting the elderly and housebound.
