The Royal Military Canal joins the River Rother at Iden Lock
The Royal Military Canal joins the River Rother at Iden Lock
Iden Lock was built in 1808 to link the Royal Military Canal with the River Rother and the sea. On 18th November 1808 a great storm was battering the coast at Hythe and after the sea defences were breached a wave of water was heading for the newly-constructed Iden Lock. The lock keeper was warned just in time, opening the gates and allowing the water to pour into the River Rother without damaging the lock.

The story of this is on the notice seen here next to the lock - LinkExternal link Iden Lock is now disused and navigation through it is no longer possible. This view looks beyond the lock to where the River Rother joins from the right. The Rother and the Royal Military Canal share the same course to beyond Rye.
