More on Miscanthus
More on Miscanthus
I have been vaguely puzzled for some time about what this tall reedy crop is that you see more and more frequently, and here it is again.
I get back and find that fellow Geographer Dr Duncan Pepper has been up here earlier in the year taking pictures of the same thing and, unlike me, identifying it. ST5152 : A modern crop- Miscanthus-I think
Miscanthus, or Elephant Grass, is a very high yield crop which can be used as fuel. Unlike grain crops, it is a cut and come again product so it doesn't have to be replanted every year.
Duncan's picture shows it in winter when it loses its leaves. The dry stems are harvested in early spring, just before regrowth from the base starts again.
