Tunnels Beaches - Ladies' pool - Ilfracombe
There are two beaches which can be reached via tunnels on the northwest coast of Ilfracombe. This is a view of the so-called "Ladies' Pool" a tidal lagoon created by building up the sides of a naturally occurring basin in the rocks here. The pool is visible for three hours either side of Low Tide - at other times being merged with the sea. There is a large plug in the basin, and once a year this plug is removed, and the basin is drained and cleaned.
Bathing and swimming at the site was segregated for 82 years from the pools' opening in 1823 until 1905, and the pool seen here was reserved for the ladies, hence its name. There were originally three pools, but this is the only one that survives, though there are plans to recreate the "Gentlemen's Pool"
Entry to these beaches and pools is via tunnels, and they are known collectively as the "Tunnels Beaches" attraction - entry costs 2.50 for adults.
