The name of the fields according to Hurstpierpoint's 1842 tithe map that have been merged to form a larger unit. Great Chates was to the west adjacent to Stairbridge Lane part of which has been lost to the construction of Bolney Grange Farm. Little Chates was located at the far eastern end. To the north is TQ2721 : Barn Field/Copse Field and to the south is TQ2721 : The Leg (1). This detached portion of Hurstpierpoint parish was transferred to Bolney in 1934.
