Benchmark on Sidbury Lock
Benchmark on Sidbury Lock
This benchmark was established in 1849 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 62.1230 feet [18.9351 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Manchester to Gloucester (Branch Levelling to Public Buildings, &c. in the City of Worcester and its environs) levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 8. Sidbury Lock, No. 56, on Worcester and Birmingham Canal. Bolt in South end of West side ; level with surface (Public Abstract p.40). The bolt is just visible in the centre front of the picture. It is on the north-west side of the lock (opposite the towpath) in the stone cill by the bottom gate. Today there is no trace of the carved fluted arrow that would have indicated that it is a benchmark.
