NS3878 : Leaf galls on Redshank

Leaf galls on Redshank
Leaf galls on Redshank
The plant is beside a path, NS3977 : Strathleven Walk. Several galled examples were in this area. None of them were in flower; however, on a few of them, some of the less affected leaves had a dark spot at the centre, making it easy to identify the plants as Redshank (Persicaria maculosa).

The picture shows the bright colours of the galls; the leaf is also considerably thickened, and its margin is rolled downwards. These galls are fairly common, and they are caused by a gall midge, Wachtliella persicariae.
