Approaching Portsmouth via the M275
Approaching Portsmouth via the M275
The M275 is surely one of the most scenic short motorways in Britain; very pleasant on a bright summer day. It is also a major feat of engineering, being built on a man-made causeway that was created specifically for the motorway.
The M275 Motorway
The M275 is a short (2-mile long) motorway which is the principal route for entering and leaving Portsmouth where it continues as the A3. Its northern terminus at Junction 12 of the M27. The motorway, which was opened in 1976, is a major feat of engineering. It is built on land that was created specifically for the motorway - it's actually a section of Portsmouth Harbour. Much of the material used for the man-made causeway is chalk, which came from the M27's deep cutting through Portsdown Hill between junctions 11 and 12 (LinkExternal link Chris's British Road Directory). It was built without a full hard shoulder; instead, a narrow verge is maintained for its entire length.

In January 2013, work commenced to build a new junction and a 663-space park and ride facility at Tipner (LinkExternal link Portsmouth City Council).
