Junction on Hammond Road
Ravenscar, originally called Peak, is often referred to as The Town That Never Was. At the turn of the 19th/20th centuries it was proposed to develop a ‘New Seaside Watering Place’ , served by the railway which linked Scarborough and Whitby . The planned town of 1700 plots for terraced houses, villas, hotels and shops was laid out on the grid iron plan; roads were built , sewers were laid and plots of land put up for auction. It was an almost total failure and the development company folded in 1913. This has left wide roads that lead nowhere and a few very urban houses in this open countryside.
Here is another junction on the grid. What was intended to be The Crescent running off Hammond Road is now just a farm track, though kerbs and manhole covers are in place.
