The line was built by the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1849 to provide a more direct route to Lincoln, closing in 1959 due to the condition of Torkesy Viaduct. The western section was reopened in 1969 to provide a link to Cottam Power Station for coal trains.
