From left to right: Challenge Wales, Dasher and Emerald Star
Challenge Wales was launched as one of 12 identical yachts to compete in the world's toughest yacht race, the round-the-world Global Challenge. After taking part in four of the races, she became a training vessel in 2009. In 2012 Challenge Wales was invited to be part of the Queen's Jubilee Thames Pageant, and young people from across Wales were able to sail her up the Thames as part of a special Jubilee voyage.
Dasher is a Nicholson 55 boat operated by the Joint Services Adventurous Sail Training Centre in Gosport, which organises sail training expeditions to help members of the Armed Forces to develop character and leadership skills.
Emerald Star was launched in 2002 and is one of the smallest ships participating in Tall Ships Festival 2014, with only nine trainees and one permanent crew member. Entered by the China Sail Training Association, this ship plans to find its crew from Chinese students at the University of Plymouth.
