The Great Dorset Steam Fair takes place at Tarrant Hinton in Dorset every year over 5 days in late August/early September. Originally conceived by Michael Oliver, the first rally proper took place in 1969, taking place every year since then. The 2014 event was therefore the 46th. It has been held at its current site since 1988, occupying an area of 600 acres. Visitor numbers are estimated at 200,000 over the 5 days. Although the focus is on steam - in particular traction engines, show engines, fairgrounds, and steam ploughs - it includes a much wider range of heritage vehicles, as well as country crafts, trades stalls and music events.

Michael Oliver, who was subsequently awarded the MBE in 2004, handed over the running of the show to his son Martin in 2002. He died on 29 November 2009, and a memorial stone to him is situated alongside the field used for steam ploughing at the show, fittingly overlooking the whole site.
