Benchmark on Wychnor Hall Bridge
Benchmark on Wychnor Hall Bridge
This bench mark was established in 1851 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 180.6520 feet [55.0627 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Sheffield to Birmingham levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 200. Bolt in East parapet of canal bridge, No. 46 ; 1.87 ft. below top of battlement." (Public Abstract p.361). The canal bridges have since been renumbered, and Wychnor Hall Bridge is now bridge no. 42. The benchmark is unusual in that the datum line has been extended to the right to include the bolt.
