The canal was constructed for Thomas Kymer 1766-8 as part of a project to bring coal from Kymer's mines to a new quay downstream from Kidwelly. The project was short lived due to silting problems in the channel seawards from the quay and eventually the coal trade moved along the coast to Burry Port.
