Tywford Waterworks - lime mixing plant
Tywford Waterworks - lime mixing plant
This waterworks used to use slaked lime in solution to soften the water (by converting soluble calcium salts to insoluble calcium salts and thus reducing hardness). Quick lime (CaO) was made on site by burning chalk in flare kilns. It was then mixed with water in the tank on the right and the solution was stirred by the three cylinder hydraulic engine running on mains water pressure.
