SY8279 : Portland Stone

taken 10 years ago, near to West Lulworth, Dorset, England

Portland Stone
Portland Stone
From the sea outside Lulworth Cove you can get a good view of the Portland Stone dipping inland. This is very hard resistant rock, and it protects the softer, younger rocks from the sea. It has been breached to form Lulworth Cove itself, and there are two natural arches and a short gap at SY8279 : Stair Hole, where the sea has got inside the rock barrier and is carving out a new cove.
