Remnants of a former ram pump installation
A century ago, before the availability of electric power in the countryside, water could be pumped uphill at favourable sites by means of a ram pump. This ingenious device used the momentum of a long column of water flowing downhill in a cast iron pipe to oscillate via flap valves and a pressure acummulator such that a slow thumping pulse of water was diverted and forced back up hill. One drawback was that in a severe frost the feed pipe could freeze and crack the cast iron pipe.
