TQ0472 : Stanwell Moor Road

Stanwell Moor Road
Stanwell Moor Road
This is an unusual road in that it runs between the embankments of reservoirs - King George VI Reservoir on the left and Staines Reservoirs on the right, hidden behind the trees here.

In the words of Ian Nairn in Nairn's London (1966): "The many and varied needs of outer London throwing up a man-made combination which is already intriguing and could be superb. The road runs in a narrow cutting between steep grass banks which have sheep grazing on them to complete the surreal feeling that this ought to be in the West Riding. A 132-kV electricity grid line marches down the middle, and the result is a memorable discordance. The valley is formed by the retaining walls of two reservoirs. They are mostly inaccessible, but a footpath runs up on the eastern side to a landscape which is magnificently absurd."

The sheep were nowhere to be seen but the rest still rings true. The path on to the reservoirs is just ahead on the right. For what Ian Nairn says about the walk between the reservoirs and a photograph of the path see LinkExternal link
