Overgrown RAF pillbox
Overgrown RAF pillbox
This is one of two Air Ministry pillboxes guarding RAF Docking which was an active airfield during WW2.
The WW2 airfield at Docking
Initially the location served as a dummy aerodrome, intended to confuse the enemy into believing it to be a real airfield and to drop their bombs here rather than on RAF Bircham Newton, the real airfield nearby. When it was decided that Docking was far better suited for night operations than its parent station at Bircham Newton, its grass runways were soon populated by a number of different types of RAF aircraft, with the probably most important squadron stationed here being the No 521 Squadron, a meterological unit tasked with providing the most recent weather data urgently required by RAF's bombardment squadrons.

The airfield was sold off in 1958 and the land has long since reverted to agriculture. Only a few of the original buildings remain on some of the former campsites.
