This site was a bobbin mill and latterly made handles for tools but closed in the 1990s and the site has now been converted into light industrial units and shops. When I visited in the 1980s, there was an off-site Garrett semi-portable ‘locomobile’ engine and an Ashworth & Parker inverted vertical compound (enclosed) engine that drove a dynamo. While the fate of the high-speed engine is currently unknown, Old Glory magazine has recently revealed that the Garrett was removed on 24 June, 2014 to Alex Sharphouse’s collection at Old Hall Farm in Bouth, Cumbria.

Old Hall Farm is a working farm that uses traditional methods to cultivate the land, including ploughing by horse, steam and vintage tractor. Threshing using a traditional threshing machine takes part at the appropriate time of year and there is also a ‘steam powered dairy’. This sounds like a site in need of a visit and ISSES would welcome any reports on this. In the meantime, the Garrett is currently on display outdoors, although there are plans to add a set of wheels to convert it to a portable.

The Garrett, seen here, is a compound condensing superheated (CCS) overtype semi-portable, built in 1913 as No. 31164 and initially supplied to a London laundry. It was installed second hand at Staveley in the 1930s and is believed to have worked until the 1960s and was subsequently moved off-site within the works. The cylinders are c10” & c18” x 16” and fitted with piston valves. A crankshaft governor controlled the HP cut-off. Steam was produced at 190 psi and the boiler was fired with wood waste.
