Corryvreckan whirlpool
Corryvreckan whirlpool
In the foreground, part of the famous Corryvreckan whirlpool. The whirlpool which forms due to the strong tides and undersea topography in the strait between Scarba and Jura, is not in fact a single phenomenon. Rather it consists of a series of clockwise-circulating bodies of water moving in from the east. The rugged south coast of the Isle of Scarba can be seen beyond.
