NJ2660 : Whitebeam (Sorbus sp)

Whitebeam (Sorbus sp)
Whitebeam (Sorbus sp)
The shelter belt planted alongside the road here contains several trees which I think are all whitebeams. The undersides of the leaves are silvery with soft hairs. However the leaf shapes are variable, and wild whitebeam is unusual in this area, so they are probably a cultivated variety or hybrid. My thanks to Robin Stott for suggesting that it is Swedish Whitebeam (S intermedia), which is a hybrid between Rowan (S aucuparia) and Whitebeam (S aria).
