The bank of the southern Staines Reservoir
The bank of the southern Staines Reservoir
It is an amazing high-level walk between Town Lane and Stanwell Moor Road crossing the two halves of Staines Reservoirs, completed in 1902. In the words of Ian Nairn in Nairn's London (1966): "A footpath runs across a landscape which is magnificently absurd. The foreground is all water, twenty feet above the surrounding Middlesex plain, so that only the roofs of houses appear above it: a very unsettling effect. The footpath sets off undeterred across the middle, heading for Stanwell, full of birdwatchers - this is London's backhanded way of making a nature reserve. And over to the north, between the houses and trees, the giant tails of the airliners glint as they move around the London Airport perimeter track. The Middlesex landscape has been shaken up and remade by the Mad Hatter: and the result is some compensation for the twenty miles of building, most of it dreary, between here and Piccadilly Circus."

The walk is actually now in Surrey and has never never been in London and I have yet to see any birdwatchers. This direction is towards Stanwell from Stanwell Moor Road. For a photograph of Stanwell Moor Road and what Nairn has to say about it see LinkExternal link

The pathway is to the left of the fence and a view along it can be seen at LinkExternal link There are three points along the path where a viewpoint has been provided to look across the southern of the two reservoirs and this is the one nearest Stanwell Moor Road.
